Manawa Ora

Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens 2014 -2015

The NZ species of Mangrove tree, Avicennia marina subsp. australasica grows quietly around the edges of the Kaipara Harbour. Its appearance – an unassuming, sturdy, simple-leaved plant, belies the importance of its existence. Amongst the shallow yet widespread root system anchoring the tree, mud snails, worms and shellfish make their homes. Within the network of stems and snorkel breathing roots submerged by the incoming and outgoing tides, is a sanctuary for young fish, crabs and eel. And heron, kingfisher and shags are a few of the many birds that roost in the leafy shelter of the branches.

This Geometric Sphere sculpture ‘Manawa Ora’ meaning breath of life or hope, celebrates the vital role this plant plays in maintaining the health of the Kaipara Harbours’ estuary – a small link in the network of the ecosystem – and the well-being of our planet as a whole.
